Sporting Lisbon defender Paulo Oliveira happy with Manchester United links

Sporting Lisbon defender Paulo Oliveira has revealed he is happy to be linked with a move to Manchester United.

Reports in the Daily Star suggested that Louis van Gaal is prepared to shell out £6m on the centre-back, having already sent scouts to watch him play in Portugal.

The 23-year-old has been impressive since signing for Sporting last year and he has caught the eye of Man United’s representatives.

Oliveira admitted that the reports suggesting a move to United could be on the cards are positive for him but he moved to pledge his immediate future to Sporting.

“It’s a good sign,” he said of the United links.

“I don’t know the truth of these claims, but it’s good to know that your work is being assessed and I have continue to work so as to not rest on my laurels. I’m happy to be here and I hope to win more titles.”

United failed to make a central defensive signing this summer and now, with injuries to key players at the back, are struggling to put out a consistent back four. Since the injury to Luke Shaw, the back four has changed constantly, something van Gaal will want to put an end to.

Oliveira could be the answer to United’s defensive problems. Still young, the Portuguese could add some much needed strength in depth in the centre-back position for the Reds and could definitely add some steel to the defence.
