James Weir looking to break into Manchester United first-team

Manchester United youngster James Weir has his sights set on breaking into the clubs first team.

The 20-year-old has been impressive for Warren Joyce’s under 21 side so far this campaign and has regularly been training with the first team. Weird captained the under 21’s during their victory over Everton and is now focused on progressing to play at senior level.

The midfielder has played in a variety of positions this year, including on the left wing as well as in the centre of midfield and his versatility could help him catch Louis van Gaal‘s eye. Weir is very clear that his sole ambition right now is to make his breakthrough into the senior squad.

Speaking to manutd.com, he said: “The goal is to get in the first team,”

“I try to do my best and impress Warren and the coaches plus the first-team staff in training. Hopefully, I can get there. I just try to do as well as I can by keep pushing and striving towards that first team. I’ve been training with them a few times in pre-season and just want to get on their radar and maybe get in the squad one time.”

Van Gaal has been quick to give youngsters their chance since he has come to the club with the likes of Paddy McNair and Andreas Pereira making their first team debuts under the Dutchman. Weir is looking at his teammates rise to the top as encouragement that he can do the same.

He added: “You never know how things will work out – I look at Paddy, Willo, Andreas and Jesse and just hope I can do that too.”

Weir is another one of those players right on the fringe of a call-up to van Gaal’s first team and will want to continue his good form in order to stake a claim for his place. However, the lack of under 21 football due to fixture postponements means Weir will struggle to impress on that platform.

The Englishman may have to bide his time and continue going from strength to strength in training before he eventually gets his opportunity to show everyone what he is all about.
