Ander Herrera not afraid of midfield competition at Manchester United

Ander Herrera is not afraid of the extra competition for places at Manchester United and has instead welcomed it.

The 26-year-old came back into the team on Saturday after an absence, partly due to injury and other times because of Louis van Gaal‘s choice, and had a stunning impact.

He grabbed a goal and an assist in a man of the match winning performance which had Man United fans purring over having him back in the team.

Last season, Herrera was ostracised from the team for an extended period but forced his way back into it through hard work and his performances. The same has happened this year but although there is increased competition, Herrera is happy to have those new players in the squad.

“You take advantage of that,” Herrera said of the added competition for places.

“When you play with the best players you take advantage of that like we did. This is good for me, good for the club. I always think the same way. When the club signs top players you are going to take advantage of that and that is what I’m doing.

“You have [Schweinsteiger] and also Michael Carrick and they are very experienced guys. I think Morgan and me can learn a lot from them. I think we were very comfy and when Michael came in also the same. We are similar players. We understand football the same way.”

Herrera’s attitude is so commendable. Never tired of hard and never dampened by set-backs, he always looks for the positive in situations even if he isn’t getting regular first-team football.

So far this season, Herrera’s performances in the No.10 role have been head and shoulders above what any other player has been able to offer in the position, yet his place in the team is far from guaranteed. Fans want to see that change and I’m sure Herrera does as well.

When fit, Herrera needs to be one of the first names on United’s team-sheet and that trend needs to start with this week’s games against CSKA Moscow and Manchester City.
