Gary Neville praises Louis van Gaal for tactical response in Manchester United’s win against Everton

Gary Neville has praised Louis van Gaal for going back to basics in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Everton last weekend.

Man United produced a superb display at Goodison Park and ran out deserved winners thanks to goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney.

The performance came after United were torn apart by Arsenal at the Emirates stadium before the international break.

Neville believes van Gaal responded well tactically after the 3-0 drubbing by Arsenal.

“The contrast on Saturday was absolutely dramatic. It was a case of Manchester United being patient, compact. It was a completely different thing to that Arsenal game,” Neville said.

“I’m sure van Gaal, when he think about the Arsenal game, will think, ‘if we’d done this, would it have been different’, even though Arsenal played brilliantly well.

“It culminated in United dominating the game. It was typical of how an away team would create a perfect away performance.

“Against Arsenal it was a complete blip, in terms of the tactics.”

Van Gaal was at fault for his tactics against Arsenal but he deserves credit for his response, which showed experience and nous. If United are to be successful this season, they cannot afford a repeat of the display against Arsenal. The hope is that van Gaal has learnt his lesson.
