Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has revealed that his side were interested in bringing Anthony Martial to the club while he was still at Lyon.
The 19-year-old made the move to Monaco in 2013 for a fee in the region of €8.5 million, something Ajax were unwilling to offer at the time.
Since Martial’s move to Manchester United on transfer deadline day this summer, it has become apparent that a whole host of clubs were looking to sign the Frenchman and it is easy to see why. Reports suggest that both Chelsea and Arsenal were looking to bring Martial to London but the youngster chose Man United and has been hugely impressive since joining.
“We followed him closely when he was 16, but then Monaco arrived first and took him from Lyon for €8.5m”, Overmars said.
“For someone that age, it was quite some figure…”
United forked out £36 million to sign Martial, making him the most expensive teenager in the world and he has been one of the club’s best players since his arrival. However, Ajax are the first club to confirm that they were interested in Martial when he was still at Lyon.
The striker signed as somewhat of an unknown quantity and the fee that United paid came as a shock to many fans. Given Martial’s start to life at Old Trafford, it does not come as a surprise that so many clubs have kept a close eye on him for such a long time.
