Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has praised Anthony Martial‘s consistency after the striker scored the equaliser in his sides 1-1 draw at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

Martial got on the end of an Antonio Valencia cross to head home from 12 yards with a brilliantly placed finish to ensure Man United left Moscow with a point.

The striker had previously given away a soft penalty which allowed CSKA to take the lead but he made amends with his effort in the second half.

The 19-year-old has got off to a fantastic start at United and his strike against CSKA was his fifth goal in just nine appearances for United. Since signing on transfer deadline day from Monaco, Martial has become one of the side’s most important players this season and he proved his worth again with his first ever Champions League goal.

Van Gaal was pleased with the youngster’s display, despite the penalty, and he said after the game: “He was playing again with a lot of threat for the opponent. He always plays at a certain level so is very consistent and for a 19 year old boy, I like that.”

United will be relieved to have avoided defeat after a poor first half performance but, at the same time, will be disappointed to not have gone on and got a winner. The momentum was with United after Martial’s equaliser but couldn’t quite fashion a chance to take the lead.

Nevertheless, a point away from home in the Champions League is always a good result and attention will now turn back to the Premier League and the huge matter of the Manchester derby on Sunday. Manchester City visit Old Trafford just two points ahead of United in the league and a win for United would send a huge statement in the title race, despite being so early on in the season.
