Anthony Martial was Manchester United’s stand-out performer in attack against Manchester City in what was a lacklustre derby.
Playing out on the left-wing for the second consecutive game, Martial was the only Man United player who had the confidence to run at a City defender and it caused them all sorts of problems.
Bacary Sagna, Fernandinho and Vincent Kompany all tried to stop Martial but he was a constant thorn in their side. The fact he attempted to take on a defender on no less than 13 occasions says it all really.
After another dull performance from Wayne Rooney, Louis van Gaal surely has to be questioning whether it would suit United better to have Martial playing up front, where he was so devastating in the first few games of his career.
The only thing United lacked today was somebody up front who was willing to take a shot on, who was willing to make the final run and get on the end of a cross. Martial could have provided that but was wasted out on the wing and there are plenty who feel that is something which needs to change for us to solve our own problems.
