Phil Jones not worried with Manchester United’s interest in Sergio Ramos and Mats Hummels

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is not worried about other players the club might look to bring in over the coming years.

Sergio Ramos, Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi were just a few of the defensive names that Man United were linked with this past summer. The Reds decided not to purchase a new centre-back despite their lack of options there, giving extra responsibility to the likes of Jones and Chris Smalling.

Despite all the claims during transfer windows that United will be signing almost every central defender on the planet, Jones is not concerned about his place in the side. In spite of his recent injuries, the 23-year-old is confident he is at the right club and enjoys the competition.

“We are at Manchester United. We are always going to be linked with Ramos or Hummels or whoever it is, we are always going to be linked with players. It’s not a problem,” he said.

“It’s something you have to deal with from when you are U14s. I remember being at Blackburn and someone comes along at under-14s, or U15s, U16s, U17s, U18s, but that is football for you but you have to battle your way through and show people.”

Many players have been unable to handle the pressure of never having a secured starting spot at United when competition for places has always been great. Jones feels that it is a key part of being a player at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

He added: “If you can’t cope with that you don’t deserve to be at the club. There’s competition here.

“We are at one of the best clubs in the world. I would be a bit worried if we weren’t linked with the best players in the world. It’s natural and it’s healthy.”

The Englishman will be hoping to stay fit for an extended period of time now that he has worked himself back into the team. Following an injury at the start of the season, Jones has won his place back ahead of Daley Blind and has looked solid since his return.

There have always been high hopes for the former Blackburn man but injuries and a lack of opportunities have hampered his development. He will now want to keep himself fit and do the best he can to make one of those centre-back berths his own.
