Louis van Gaal: It is ‘difficult to say’ who will play against Middlesbrough on Wednesday

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that it is “difficult to say” who will face Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Man United have a small squad and a number of players have seen a lot of time on the pitch in recent weeks.

Juan Mata was rested against CSKA Moscow last week but the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Anthony Martial may need a break.

Van Gaal revealed that a number of his squad are in the “red zone” ahead of the clash against ‘Boro.

“But I have a lot of players in the ‘red zone’ because we have had lot of matches and we have a lot of matches to play.

“I have to see if I can use them or not. I have to decide tomorrow [Wednesday]. We need all the days to recover at this moment, so it is difficult to say.”

Of course, United should be winning every game and it is important that van Gaal puts out a strong team, particularly after the debacle against MK Dons last season. It is a delicate balancing act and the Dutchman will have some tough decisions to make before the match.
