Antonio Valencia misses Middlesbrough game with injury

Louis van Gaal has revealed Antonio Valencia will miss Manchester United’s game against Middlesbrough on Wednesday through injury.

The Ecuadorian midfielder had to be taken off at the weekend during the Manchester derby and hobbled off straight down the tunnel, leading to concerns over his fitness for upcoming Capital One Cup tie.

Now, with Valencia’s absence through injury confirmed, Matteo Darmian is surely in line for a return to the starting XI having been left out for the last couple of weeks.

“Of course, Valencia is injured – that we could all see,” said van Gaal.

It’s a shame for Valencia because he’s been in a good run of form at right-back and kept Raheem Sterling quiet during the Manchester derby, so the injury is a setback for him.

That being said, United fans would certainly prefer to see Darmian return to the position because he’s been outstanding this season. He’ll also be hungry to come back into the team after spending a couple of weeks on the sidelines.
