From Germany: Manchester United scouts watch Hakan Calhanoglu against AS Roma

Manchester United scouts watched Bayer Leverkusen’s Hakan Calhanoglu in action last week during their 4-4 draw with AS Roma in and are seriously interested in a move for him, according to SportBild in Germany.

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Michael Michael Shade says the club are ‘calm and relaxed’ over Calhanoglu’s future but admit that there is a threshold which would mean any club could sign Calhanoglu, and SportBild feel that figure is around the €40m mark.

This is not the first time Calhanoglu has been linked with United. During the summer, reports suggested a €36m bid was being prepared but nothing materialised and now the link has cropped up once again.

SportBild go on to say Calanoglu doesn’t have a release clause in his contract but quote the €40m price as enough to interest Bayer into letting one of their best players go.

Halanoglu is a set piece specialist and it would be great for United to have somebody consistently posing threats from free-kicks but again but other than that, attacking midfield is a position where we’re spoilt for choice isn’t it?

If Ander Herrera can’t even get into the team, it would seem pointless to bring in another one in the same role. That is, of course, unless Wayne Rooney isn’t going to be here past the summer but that’s a different conversation altogether.

We’ll keep an eye out for how this story with Calhanoglu develops in the next few months.
