Aitor Karanka believes his Middlesbrough side deserved their Capital One Cup penalty shootout victory against Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Middlesbrough defended well at Old Trafford and frustrated the hosts for large periods of the game.
It was a disappointing night for United but Karanka was full of praise for his players following the clash.
“I told my players after the game that we were better than them – we were more confident on the pitch, we were fitter than them,” Karanka said.
“For that reason, I have to say how proud I am of my players. Penalties sometimes you lose – last season we lost against Liverpool after 30 penalties – and sometimes you can win like today. The main thing is the performance, and the performance today against Man United, a big team, it was amazing.”
Middlesbrough are currently playing in the Championship but they proved to be more than a match for their more illustrious opponents. Louis van Gaal did rotate his team for the game but they should have had enough to see off the challenge.
