Angel Di Maria has revealed that he couldn’t wait to leave Manchester United at the end of his Old Trafford career.
The Argentine became the club’s record signing when he made the move from Real Madrid last year and he began life at Man United superbly. Di Maria was scoring goals, recording assists and putting in some eye-catching performances before injury kept him out of the side.
The 27-year-old was then played out of position by Louis van Gaal and saw his United career slowly deteriorate.
His form went out the window and he eventually left the club after less than a year, moving to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. The winger insists he never wanted to leave Madrid and things were out of his control.
“My intention was always to stay [at Madrid]. I don’t really know what happened on the inside [of the deal] these are things that representatives deal with. It happens in football,” Di Maria said.
Asked about his move to United, he added: “I started very well but then I had problems with people at the club, I started being left on the bench, then my home was robbed. It all just made me want to get out of there as quickly as possible.
“My move to PSG could have happened before this summer but it didn’t for financial reasons and I ended up going to United.
“In the summer I had the chance to go there again and I could not say no.”
It begs the question of why Di Maria would ever agree to come to United when PSG was always his first choice. His comments make it seem like his heart was never in his move to the Premier League, which could have influenced the way he played during his short time at the club.
Di Maria saying he never wanted to leave Madrid will also be a kick in the teeth for PSG fans. It is clear that the former Benfica man should never have come to Old Trafford and it is something both the player and the club surely regret.
