Louis van Gaal confirms injury forced James Wilson withdrawal against Middlesbrough

Louis van Gaal has confirmed he was forced to bring Wayne Rooney on against Middlesbrough due to an injury to James Wilson.

The 19-year-old striker was taken off at half-time and there were question marks over whether his withdrawal had anything to do with the fact he was limping towards the end of the first half.

It doesn’t sound like Wilson would have been taken off if he hadn’t suffered an injury, indicating he had no intention of using Rooney unless he was forced to which proved to be the case.

Wilson will be particularly disappointed with how the game went for him. After getting no chances this season, the game against Middlesbrough was what he had been waiting a long time for yet it ended with an injury and only 45 minutes of action.

It’s another setback for a player who has so much promise but he’s still only 19 and he’ll be able to overcome it. Hopefully his injury is nothing more than a knock and he’ll be available for selection again shortly.
