Former Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane is refusing to compare new Manchester United striker Anthony Martial to Thierry Henry.
Martial has been likened to his French counterpart on many occasions since he joined Man United and his first goal for the club did nothing to quash those comparisons.
A typical calm, side-footed finish into the far corner was Henry’s trademark during his time at Arsenal and Martial has proven just how similar the two are.
However, Zidane feels that it is too early to compare the two, given everything Henry achieved in the game. The former Arsenal striker is the club’s leading goal scorer and he won the Premier League on numerous occasions. Martial will be delighted if he can replicate Henry’s success but Zidane does not want to get carried away.
“Come on, Thierry is one of the greats”, Zidane said.
“It is not fair to put that pressure on the kid. It is obvious he is full of ability and confidence, so it looks good for the future.”
The encouraging thing for United fans is these comparisons are coming about mostly due to Martial’s performances this season. The 19-year-old has been one of United’s best players since signing on deadline day and he has already started to justify his massive price tag.
It is clear that there are similarities between Martial and Henry and it will be interesting to see how the youngster develops over time at United. If he can make himself even half the player Henry was, the Reds will have a seriously good player on their hands for years to come.
