Louis van Gaal feels Anthony Martial’s best position is as a striker

Louis van Gaal feels Anthony Martial‘s best position is as a striker for Manchester United and wants him to develop into that role in the long-term.

Martial has been forced to play on the left-wing in order to accommodate for Wayne Rooney and that move has coincided with the Frenchman not scoring for Man United.

Fans have become frustrated with van Gaal’s continued decision to keep playing Martial out wide but the Dutchman is under no illusion as to where his best position is.

“I think his best position is the striker’s position but he needs to develop himself still,” van Gaal said about Martial.

“He is very young but I think it is better he develops in the striker’s position.”

That’s what fans wanted to hear but it comes in complete contrast to van Gaal only a couple of days ago when he said he was still trying to figure out Martial’s best position. Maybe he’s had a moment of clarity after mulling over the fallout from our 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Everybody is well aware Martial’s best position is as United’s main striker but until Rooney is pushed out of that role, there is no chance the 19-year-old will be playing there. Hopefully that happens against CSKA Moscow.
