Rio Ferdinand: Wayne Rooney answered critics with late winner against CSKA Moscow

Rio Ferdinand believes Wayne Rooney answered his critics with a late goal in the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

Rooney has come under fire for some below par performances this term but his strike against CSKA could prove to be crucial.

Man United went into the game on the back of three consecutive 0-0 draws and the three points at Old Trafford lifted some of the pressure on the team and Louis van Gaal.

Ferdinand praised Rooney and United for getting “the job done”.

“He always seems to pop up with a goal when it’s needed,” Ferdinand said.

“The pressure is on, people are doubting him, is he over the hill? Is he too old now? He always seems to come good and it’s pleasing to see.

David de Gea and Chris Smalling deserve special mention before that goal, they made a great save and a block on the line.

“To go up the other end, Carrick with a fantastic pass for Lingard, and Rooney in the right place, where he always is, to finish it off. It was a good night, worrying at times, but they got the job done which was important.”

Rooney’s strike means he is now joint second on the all-time scoring charts for the club with 237 goals, equal with Denis Law. He has taken his fair share of flak this term but great players keep going and Rooney certainly did that on Tuesday. The hope is that the goal spurs him on for the rest of the campaign.
