Manchester United’s performance against CSKA Moscow was, in large parts, very similar to our most recent performances – painfully repetitive and slow.
However, the first 15 minutes on Tuesday night were as refreshing as a sea breeze. Man United attacked, really attacked, with intent and, most pleasing of all, pace. CSKA were taken aback and we were making chances aplenty.
That right there is United. A team who forces defences onto the back foot because of high tempo attacking football and what Louis van Gaal showed us is that the players are more than capable of doing it. So, let’s see it more often.
The 4-4-2 formation really seemed to work. Wayne Rooney didn’t play in an orthodox No.10 role and United’s wingers, particularly Jesse Lingard, caused CSKA all sorts of problems.
We’ve brought Morgan Schneiderlin back into the team but that depends on whether he can overcome his current illness troubles.
There was lots to improve on from the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow but if our players can attack with that much pace against West Brom, they’ll find it hard to contain us.
