Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney divides fans despite goal against CSKA Moscow

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney received a mixed reception from fans despite his goal in the 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

The striker was having an indifferent game against the Russian champions but got himself on the scoresheet in the 79th minute after some brilliant work from Jesse Lingard.

Lingard’s volleyed cross fell straight to Rooney, who buried the header to give Man United three much needed points in the Champions League.

England’s leading goalscorer started in the No.10 role behind Anthony Martial and showed a slight improvement to his recent performances in the first half. Rooney got involved a lot more than usual but missed a sitter in the second half, adding to the pressure on his shoulders. He shrugged it off to score the goal that gave United the win but plenty of supporters were still left unconvinced by his performance:

The furore surrounding Rooney’s continued selection for United felt like it was reaching a breaking point before the game and the 30-year-old’s performance before he scored was not quite good enough to justify his place in the side. However, after Martial was replaced by Marouane Fellaini, United were depending on Rooney for a goal and he didn’t disappoint.

It could prove to be a huge moment in both Rooney’s and United’s seasons as they look to get back on track following their recent shortcomings. The Reds came into the came on the back of three goalless draws in a row and it can’t be understated how much the side needed to score a goal in front of their own fans. Rooney, despite an inconsistent overall performance, obliged and sent his team to the top of their Champions League group.
