Wayne Rooney thanks fans after tight win against CSKA Moscow

Wayne Rooney has thanked supporters after Manchester United’s narrow 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It was another painful night for Man United fans, who, after three 0-0 draws in a row, anxiously watched on as their side once again couldn’t find the net.

But, following a herculean goal-line block by Chris Smalling, the deadlock was finally broken as Rooney’s 79th minute header sent Old Trafford into a rapture of joy and relief.

The captain was keen to express his gratitude towards supporters after the full time whistle:

United’s skipper has been rightly derided in recent weeks after a series of shambolic performances upfront. His continued inclusion in Louis van Gaal‘s starting XI despite his poor form has understandably irked supporters.

However, while he wasn’t exactly up to scratch against CSKA, Rooney delivered when it mattered most. With the clock ticking, the much maligned 30-year-old, leading from the front, headed home a crucial winner for his side.

It was without a doubt Rooney’s most valuable contribution this season. Supporters will be hopeful that their captain can fully rediscover his goalscoring potency in the coming weeks following the boost.
