Michael Carrick has described Jesse Lingard as “fantastic” following the youngster’s performance in the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old always looked dangerous going forward, and despite some attacks not paying off, the England youth international provided the assist for Wayne Rooney‘s crucial header in the 79th minute.

Lingard has been a part of the United academy since a young age, and in that time has been sent out on various loan spells, including a move to Birmingham City, where he scored four goals on his debut for the Midlands outfit.

Speaking about the youngster’s talents, Carrick was eager to praise Lingard.

“I thought Jesse was fantastic. Not everything came off, but the important one did and he set the goal up,” Carrick said.

Carrick has seen an abundance of youngsters come and go during his time at United, so to label Lingard as fantastic is high praise for the player, who will now look to kick on and retain his starting role in United’s first-team.

For United, exciting times lie ahead, especially if you consider the wealth of young talent the club has at its disposal. Players such as Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj will hopefully one day form the core of what could become a fantastic team in years to come.
