Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has been left out of the Ecuador squad for the upcoming World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezuela as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.

Valencia suffered the injury in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City last month.

The 30-year-old has impressed for his country on the right wing and his absence will be a blow for Ecuador boss Gustavo Quinteros as they fight to qualify for the World Cup.

Quinteros has instead called up West Ham United’s Enner Valencia and he is hopeful that the 26-year-old can fill in on the right.

“Obviously it is difficult to improve the level showed by [Antonio] Valencia in the recent games but we have other options,” the manager said.

“Enner can play on the right side and we can take advantage of his dribbling skills but let’s see how he trains because we want to see how fit he is.”

Ashley Young has been covering at right-back in Valencia’s absence at United as Matteo Darmian has struggled in recent weeks. Young has impressed in the role, although he was recently criticised by Roy Keane for an apparent dive in the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.
