Adnan Januzaj chooses Borussia Dortmund over Belgium U21s

Belgium national team manager Marc Wilmots has revealed that Adnan Januzaj turned down the chance to represent his country’s under 21 side.

Januzaj was not selected by Wilmots for the senior side for Belgium’s friendlies against Italy and Spain and was instead offered a place with the youngsters. The 20-year-old turned down the chance, choosing to stay at Borussia Dortmund, where he is currently on loan, for the duration of the international break.

Having gone to the World Cup with the national side in 2014, Januzaj may feel hard done by that he is not in the side anymore. He is not playing enough regular football at Dortmund to warrant a place but hopefully he will use the break as a time to re-group and work towards winning back his spot.

Speaking of his under 21 side, Wilmots said: “Zakaria and Divock are in the group. I also said Januzaj was available but he preferred to stay in Dortmund. I took note.”

It is an interesting decision from Januzaj, especially given the European Championships are coming up this summer. If the winger wants to be considered for selection, he must surely do all that is asked of him. Instead, choosing to stay at Dortmund has meant that he has gone against Wilmots wishes which could prove detrimental to his case for a place in the side.

Januzaj must use the time off to work on his game and try to do enough to earn a place in the Dortmund side this season. His loan deal hasn’t quite gone to plan yet but he now has the chance to regroup and prove that he is good enough to start in the Bundesliga.
