Rochdale manager Keith Hill believes Manchester United’s Joel Castro Pereira will be a “top, top, goalkeeper” in the coming years.
Pereira joined Rochdale on a one-month loan deal in October and made his debut in the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy against Morecambe on Tuesday.
Rochdale lost 1-0 but Pereira earned the Man of the Match award after saving a penalty.
Hill was full of praise for the Portugal U21 international following the clash.
“One good thing to come out of the night was Joel’s performance and I think he is going to be a top, top goalkeeper. He has pedigree and what he has been producing in training was better than what we saw against Morecambe,” Hill said.
“His pass range is remarkable, he has composure and a thirst to win, he reads an opponent very well. He is an exceptional talent and I was always going to play him against Morecambe. I’ve got no reservations, if called upon, to play him in a league fixture, but obviously Josh Lillis is our number one goalkeeper right now.”
Pereira is just 19 years old and he still has a long way to go in his development but he couldn’t have asked for a better start for Rochdale. Hopefully the experience will stand him in good stead for when he returns to Old Trafford.
