Phil Jones admits he was frightened by blood clot injury

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has revealed the concerns he had over the thrombosis injury he suffered at the start of the season.

Jones missed the first month of the season due to thrombosis in his calf, an injury he could do nothing about. It came at the worst time possible for the 23-year-old having put in all the hard work over pre-season only to be told he could not play in the first game of the campaign.

The former Blackburn man has struggled with injuries since arriving at Old Trafford over four years ago and many felt the thrombosis was another one of these small, nagging injuries that have kept him out of action. However, Jones has now admitted that the ordeal was, in fact, not as straight forward as previously thought.

“It was pretty frightening at first at least until I found out the extent of the injury.” Jones told Sky Sports.

“I thought nothing of it at first. We got back to England but a couple of days before we played Tottenham in the first game of the season I felt it again.

“I just said to the doctor at United ‘it’s just not going away’.

“So we had a scan then and discovered there was a blood clot in the calf. It’s not from the tackle or a stupid injury, it was just a freak incident.”

It would have been frustrating for Jones to sit on the sidelines while Chris Smalling and Daley Blind started to form a formidable partnership at the back for Man United. The pair kept clean sheets at will and were starting to seem like they could be the Reds preferred partnership over the course of the season.

Jones had other ideas and since his return from injury, has done enough to make a case to start for United. His performances alongside Smalling in recent games have been encouraging and the pair even started together for England in their friendly against Spain. Jones will now hope to keep himself fit ahead of a busy part of the season and ensure his displays allow him to keep his spot in the starting XI.
