Manchester United have received significant encouragement in their pursuit of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, according to ESPN.

According to the report, Man United have made Bale their top target with the club unlikely to tempt Cristiano Ronaldo into an Old Trafford return.

Bale has struggled to settle in fully in Spain and he has suffered a mixed relationship with Madrid supporters.

The Welshman is said to be open to a move if a big Premier League club comes in for him.

However, if Ronaldo leaves the Bernabeu next summer – Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested – Bale will not be allowed to follow him out the exit door.

Bale is a superb player and one that would go a long way to making United challengers on all fronts once again.

A deal would be incredibly difficult to pull off but if there is any indication on the player’s end, United must do all they can to make it work.
