La Liga president Javier Tebas has admitted that he would have liked to see Wayne Rooney play in Spain’s top flight.
Rooney has previously been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the earlier stages of his career.
However, it is now seen as unlikely that the Manchester United captain will ply his trade in Spain.
Tebas believes Rooney would have been a great addition to La Liga.
“I’d like to have seen Rooney play in Spain. I’d like to have seen a Premier League icon play in our league,” Tebas said.
Rooney is currently going through a rough patch at Old Trafford and he has only scored twice in the Premier League this season.
English players playing overseas is a rarity in the current climate, likely due to the money that is being banded about in the Premier League. As it panned out, Rooney has instead spent a large chunk of his career at United and it looks like he may break Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record for the club, assuming of course he picks up his form.
