Denis Irwin has praised Ashley Young for providing stern competition for Matteo Darmian at right-back for Manchester United.

Darmian was suspended for the game against West Bromwich Albion before the international break while Antonio Valencia is injured.

Louis van Gaal turned has turned to Young to fill in at right-back in recent weeks and the 30-year-old has performed admirably in the role.

Irwin, who was part of Man United’s famous treble-winning side in 1999, praised Young’s contribution.

“Darmian’s got competition because Ashley’s done unbelievably well,” Irwin said.

“I don’t know how Ashley sees himself, whether he’s a winger or just glad to play. But he made one recovery tackle at (Crystal) Palace recently when he came on which was unbelievable and he has played very, very well.”

Young was often the butt of jokes during David Moyes’ time in charge of the club but the Englishman has enjoyed a new lease of life under Louis van Gaal. Young’s versatility has proven to be invaluable as he has played at left-back, right-back and on the wing. He will no doubt have another important role to play this time around.
