Bastian Schweinsteiger scores first Manchester United goal with dramatic winner against Watford

by Sid Choudhary

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was on hand to help the Reds to a hugely important victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.

Having taken the lead early on, the Reds were clawed back to 1-1 thanks to a Troy Deeney penalty with just four minutes remaining. However, Man United displayed their world-renowned never-say-die attitude and, after Jesse Lingard‘s shot was parried by Heurelho Gomes, Schweinsteiger’s attempt from an acute angle was turned into his own net by Deeney in injury time.

Although the goal wasn’t officially credited to the German it was evident how much the goal meant to him and his teammates. On a day when United were riddled with injuries both before and during the game, it was always going to be difficult to come away with three points. Schweinsteiger’s last minute impact had fans delighted, despite the World Cup winner not having the best of games:

Three points away at Watford could prove to be vital come the end of the season. Following a long international break and missing key players such as Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney, United would have known they had their work cut out for them ahead of the game. Schweinsteiger’s celebration showed just how important he and the rest of the side thought the win was, as the Reds went top of the Premier League, albeit having played a game more than their competition.

United will now need to switch their focus to an important Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford. They will be hoping to welcome back players who were unavailable for the trip to London and the experience of the likes of Schweinsteiger will be expected to galvanise the players going into the important European clash.
