Louis van Gaal thinks Memphis Depay’s best position is up front

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal feels Memphis Depay‘s best position at the club is as a striker.

Memphis started Man United’s victory over Watford up front and made an immediate impact, opening the scoring with less than a quarter of an hour gone in the game. It was the perfect return to the team that the youngster needed, as he put in a much-improved performance from earlier in the season.

Depay has mainly been deployed on the left wing for United this campaign but has been unable to really make an impact in that position. Van Gaal has experimented with the youngster in the number 10 position as well, another position that Memphis struggled in.

Speaking after the game, van Gaal said: “In the first half, Memphis was superb, like Jesse Lingard.

“I think also this role for Memphis is the best one for him. He played it also in the World Cup for me when Van Persie and Robben were injured so I knew he could do it.

“Jesse also was fantastic and we have created a lot of chances thanks to those two.”

Memphis and Lingard’s link up play was encouraging to see, as they created multiple chances. Lingard was unable to capitalise and further United’s lead against Watford but the interchange in positions showed a much more fluid attack.

Playing as a striker could give Memphis a new lease of life at Old Trafford, as he tries to reinvigorate the early parts of his United career. It hasn’t been easy for him to adapt to the Premier League but the opportunity to play up front could be ideal for his development moving forward.
