Manchester United injury update: Martial and Rooney train for PSV but Schweinsteiger and Herrera missing

by Sam Peoples

Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial returned to training with Manchester United ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with PSV but Ander Herrera and Bastian Schweinsteiger were both missing.

Herrera was taken off against Watford with a hamstring problem and Louis van Gaal was concerned that he wouldn’t be fit enough to play, so it’s certainly a concern he isn’t in training.

As for Schweinsteiger’s absence, that is unexpected and a real worry because if Schweinsteiger, Herrera and Michael Carrick are all out injured, then van Gaal faces a selection headache in midfield.

On the positive side, having both Rooney and Martial back in training is a real boost, mainly the latter as 19-year-old Martial has become our centre-piece in attack since he joined from AS Monaco in the summer.

Of course, absence from training doesn’t necessarily mean players are injured but it isn’t usually a good sign. We’ll have confirmation on their fitness from van Gaal during his press conference on Tuesday afternoon at 15.30GMT.
