Rio Ferdinand: Manchester United cannot complain about Louis van Gaal’s tactics

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United fans can have no complaints with their side’s slow style of play under Louis van Gaal given the Dutchman’s reputation before he arrived at Old Trafford.

Man United have been criticised for playing some dull football this season, most recently in the dismal 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

Van Gaal has developed a reputation as a methodical manager over the course of his career and Ferdinand insisted supporters should have seen the negative style of play coming.

“United knew what they were getting when they employed Louis van Gaal, so there can be no complaints now,” Ferdinand said.

“In many ways, why should there be, given where he has taken the club in 18 months? They knew they were getting a manager who played a precise, possession-based game. That is what he is doing but, no, it is not very exciting. It wasn’t always exciting in my day at Old Trafford, either. However, there was certainly a lot more ambition and threat in our play than there is currently with United.”

In van Gaal’s defence, United needed someone to steady the ship following the disastrous reign of David Moyes and the Dutchman has done just that.

However, there is a sense that he needs to bring United up one or two levels if he is to keep the fans on side. The team can go top of the Premier League with a win over Leicester City this weekend and that would be a good first step.
