Big debate: Should Pep Guardiola become Manchester United manager?

by Sam Peoples

After reports suggested Pep Guardiola wanted the Manchester United job after his time at Bayern Munich finishes, United Peoples TV decided to find out what fans thought.

The result so far has been overwhelmingly in favour of Guardiola coming to United. At the time of writing, 88% of 530 fans said they wanted Pep to be in charge at Old Trafford at some point in his career.

Whether that would be this summer to replace Louis van Gaal or to come in after the Dutchman’s contract ends next year is another conversation altogether but it looks like there is a strong feeling among fans about Guardiola being right for the club.

Guardiola was approached by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2012 before he retired and David Moyes was subsequently appointed, so his name has been linked to the United job plenty of times in the past.

In my opinion, Guardiola would be very suited to United. He does play the same possession based football as van Gaal but you really can’t argue with the success he’s had. In world football, there aren’t many managers who can rival Guardiola’s achievements, so there’d be no chance of another Moyes situation under the Spaniard.

It all depends what United choose to do after van Gaal’s contract expires next summer. A lot of fans would see it as far too early for Ryan Giggs to take up the job, whereas others don’t want to risk Moyes Mk.2 with Giggs coming in without experience under his belt.

United have gone through lots of transition over the last few years but there is likely to be plenty more in years to come, least not when van Gaal steps down and somebody replaces him. Could that be Guardiola?
