U21s: Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool – Marouane Fellaini inspires win

by Tracey Germaine

Following a defeat on the road to Norwich City, Manchester United took on Liverpool at home in the fifth match of the season.

Marouane Fellaini and Sergio Romero joined with the more familiar faces at U21s level as United won 3-2 thanks to goals from Fellaini, Powell and Goss.

Nick Powell continued his comeback from his hamstring injury but it was Liverpool who arguably had the better of the first half performances if not the chances.

Liverpool focused their early attacks on United’s left side, where Joe Riley was stationed. However the right-winger-cum-left-back showed that he has adapted well to the defensive role.

Fellaini gave United the lead in the 33rd minute with a cushioned tap in following a nicely weighted ball in from Andreas Pereira. Pereira, Powell and Harrop were involved in a lot of good play in the opposition half, unfortunately that good play didn’t often lead to shots on target.

United were slightly more comfortable in the second half with Guillermo Varela and Riley pushing forward from full back positions.

Liverpool had the ball in the back of the net with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock but the assistant referee had already raised his flag for offside. Liverpool were understandably aggrieved as the replay cast doubt over the offside decision.

Fellaini was the architect of United’s second goal. He played a neat one-two with Sean Goss before taking on the shot. Fulton in the Liverpool goal managed to get a hand to it but only succeeded in slowing the ball down for Powell to pounce.

Liverpool didn’t give up and scored twice as United looked to have thrown away a two-goal cushion with just over ten minutes remaining. Sinclair got the first having been left unmarked in the penalty area and within two minutes, substitute Madger Gomes scored the equaliser following a poor decision by Romero to punch the ball back into danger.

However, in classic United style the game was far from over.

Fellaini was once again involved, this time teeing up Goss at the edge of the Liverpool box for one of the young midfielder’s trademark goals from distance. Despite getting a hand to the ball Fulton was unable to deflect the ball away from goal.

The U21s next game is on 14 December against Leicester City.
