Bastian Schweinsteiger: Manchester United have a number of leaders

by Ben Topliss

Bastian Schweinsteiger has played down suggestions that he is a leader at Manchester United.

Schweinsteiger, who has won numerous trophies over the course of his career, joined Man United from Bayern Munich this summer and he has immediately gone about making himself a fans’ favourite at the club.

The German scored his first goal for United in the 1-1 draw against Leicester City last weekend and his work in midfield has given his teammates a good platform to build on. However, Schweinsteiger insisted there are a number of leaders in the squad.

“We have Wayne [Rooney], we have Michael Carrick, we have Chris Smalling, who have experience and they’re very important for that,” Schweinsteiger said.

“I try to help them. I’m not 20, so I know how it is; I just want to try to help. Of course I try to lead in some situations, but I’m not the one who says I’m a leader.”

Schweinsteiger often points and shouts at his teammates during games while moves develop but the midfielder claimed that these are suggestions rather than orders.

He added: “In that position, you have to do this, but I’m not the only one. We have a lot of players who can do this. Maybe I have a lot of experience on a high level – I’ve played World Cup finals, Champions League finals. It is different at that level and you learn a lot, so I think it’s kind of helpful.”

After so many years of midfield mediocrity, it has been hugely refreshing to see Schweinsteiger, along with Morgan Schneiderlin, shore up the middle of the park. The 31-year-old has been a superb asset for Louis van Gaal and his display’s will have a big say in whether or not the team are successful this season.
