Lee Sharpe questions ‘dwindled’ Memphis Depay and Louis van Gaal’s techniques

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe feels that Memphis Depay has ‘dwindled’ at Manchester United.

The 21-year-old hasn’t been able to lock down a first-team spot after inconsistent performances and the recent success of Jesse Lingard has pushed him further down the pecking order.

Memphis has only managed 5 goals since joining from PSV Eindhoven in the summer and although there have been glimpses of the winger who tore up the Eredivisie last year, we haven’t seen that often enough.

Sharpe feels his lacking performances could be a result of Louis van Gaal‘s management.

Speaking about Memphis to The Telegraph, Sharpe said: “He came in on fire, full of energy and enthusiasm. It seems to have dwindled a bit and I’m not sure if that’s down to the manager because with Martial we witnessed the same.

“There’s been a few players who have done good little bits but then been left out of the team. They have to start passing sideways and backwards rather than taking risks. He does look a bit fed up but then again a few others are as well.”

I think Memphis has just really struggled with the Premier League and all that comes with it. The added pressure, the extra intensity, the increased power and drive of every team right down to those bottom of the table. It’s not something he’s used to having come from the comfortable surroundings of the Eredivisie.

Fans have got every faith in Memphis in exactly the same way as they did Luke Shaw. Last year, Shaw struggled to adapt to life at Man United but prior to his injury he was in phenomenal shape and form. That sort of patience is going to be needed with Memphis as well.

With time under his belt, Memphis has all the capability to become a world-class player at United and here’s hoping he can follow in the footsteps of some of our best ever players who have donned the famous No.7 shirt prior to him.
