Anthony Martial draws blank in frustrating draw with West Ham

Manchester United fans enjoyed Anthony Martial‘s performance during the sides 0-0 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Martial started the game up front in the absence of Wayne Rooney, who was injured. The Frenchman was unlucky not to score early in the first half after a brilliant control and strike on the half-turn, only for a heroic defensive block to deny him. The youngster could also have won the game for Man United late on but his finish from Memphis Depay‘s cross crept just wide.

United once again struggled to break down a stubborn defence and saw themselves lose further ground on the likes of Leicester City and Arsenal. The Reds found it difficult to get Martial involved in the game and, when they did, the striker couldn’t quite find his shooting boots.

However, supporters were still happy with Martial’s performance:

It was United’s fifth goalless draw in their last nine games and their troubles in front of goal seem to be continuing. The Reds looked short of ideas in the final third, with Martial one of the few players making in impact near the West Ham goal. Playing on his birthday, the 20-year-old constantly tried to stretch the defence and was direct when he got on the ball.

United now have to turn their attention to the Champions League as they prepare for a make or break clash with Wolfsburg. Another goalless draw simply won’t do for the Reds, who have to win to progress. Something will definitely need to change from the game against the Hammers and fans may be relying on Martial to help United into the knockout round.
