Guillermo Varela makes Man United debut against West Ham

by Sam Peoples

Guillermo Varela came on at half-time during Manchester United’s game against West Ham to make his full senior debut.

The 22-year-old replaced Paddy McNair in the right-back position and although there were a couple of rookie mistakes (understandable as his adrenaline would have been rushing), Varela will be happy enough at how his debut went.

Varela joined back in the summer of 2013 so after a long time and plenty of hard work, he’s now finally made his debut for United and will want to build on that going forward.

Injuries are creating opportunities for youngsters this season. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson made his debut against West Brom, Axel Tuanzebe was on the bench away at Crystal Palace, Marcus Rashford has been on the bench as well and now Varela has made his debut.

There’s plenty to be frustrated about this season but the progression of youth is a genuine positive to take, albeit a small one in the face of our current lack of goals.
