It’s been a long and arduous 12 months for Nick Powell following a long period out with a severe hamstring injury but he can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been included in Manchester United’s squad which travelled to Wolfsburg on Monday. After such a long time on the sidelines, it’s something which will have Powell bouncing off the walls in excitement, even if he presents a steely exterior.
It’s been going well for Powell since his return to action with Man United’s U21s against Norwich a few weeks ago. He was then spotted training with the first-team and then followed that up with a goalscoring return with an effort in the 3-2 win over Liverpool’s U21s. The icing on the cake is Louis van Gaal including him in the squad for Wolfsburg.
After so long out of the picture, watching quietly from the shadows, Powell will now travel with the first-team, take part in the training sessions, listens to van Gaal’s pre-match team talk and get himself back into the rhythm of being a United player.
I’m a big fan of Powell and have been ever since I watched him play in the Play-Off final for Crewe Alexandra when he scored a cracking goal. I don’t expect him to play in Germany on Tuesday night but his inclusion is indicative of the excellent progress he’s been making since recovering from injury.
