Louis van Gaal attempts to strangely prove his progress with Manchester United

Louis van Gaal is risking making himself look like a fool with some of his comments following Manchester United’s defeat to Wolfsburg.

The Man United boss will now rightfully face questions over his philosophy at Man United and how happy he is with the current progress, despite getting knocked out of the Champions League.

Reporters posed that to van Gaal in his post-match press conference and his answer was staggering – he claimed that going further in the League Cup (getting knocked out in round two instead of round one) and qualifying for the Champions League is evidence of his progress.

I mean, where do we start with that? Getting knocked out of any competition is never something to brag about and the logic of using something we did last season to prove progress right now is preposterous. At the moment, United are stagnating and standing still, there are no visible signs of sustained progress.

I’m still standing in support of van Gaal until at least the end of the season but comments like this make him sound, well, deluded, and will only work against him rather than help.
