Reports emerged which suggested Rooney was not injured but had in fact been tested by Man United and those results allegedly showed alcohol in his system.
Rooney is currently sidelined with what Louis van Gaal described as a ‘nasty’ injury but the suggestion of these reports was that his absence from the team was not down to injury but the aforementioned issue relating to a test.
A published apology is a newspaper’s typical response when contacted over a potentially slander case, so it’s more than likely that the Irish Examiner was approached and told to remove the article in question alongside this apology.
At the moment there is no word on Rooney’s fitness but he didn’t travel with his teammates to Germany and was instead spotted visiting his old club Everton on Monday with his son to watch their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
Louis van Gaal will want Rooney back in his side when he’s fit, probably regardless of his form, so will be keen to have him back as soon as possible even if fans aren’t overly fussed if he’s missing for another few weeks.
