Peter Schmeichel believes Louis van Gaal deserves more time to rebuild his side following Manchester United’s early Champions League exit.
Van Gaal has been coming under increasing pressure after his side were knocked out of Europe’s elite competition by Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
Discontent among fans is more prevalent than ever and you get the sense that patience is wearing thin with the veteran Dutchman. However, Schmeichel claims that van Gaal is the right man to get Man United back on track.
“It is clear that for a certain period of time, while he is rebuilding the team, we have to accept playing in a certain way which perhaps isn’t the Manchester United way. The objective of van Gaal’s first season in charge was to get back into the Champions League and he achieved that. This season, the goal was to do better and the team are doing better.
“Although the fans keep asking the team to attack, attack, attack, they understand that they need to give van Gaal time.”
Sir Alex Ferguson’s mammoth stint in charge of United created somewhat of a mentality among fans that the manager of the club should always be backed, no matter what.
However, while that policy should be followed to an extent in relation to van Gaal, it is fully understandable why criticism from fans has been mounting and they are entitled to voice their concerns. United simply haven’t been good enough this season and blind optimism will get the team nowhere.
