Manchester United plot £50m John Stones move – report

Manchester United have identified Everton’s John Stones as their top summer transfer target, according to the Independent’s Mark Ogden.

Man United are beginning the process of drawing up their summer recruitment plans and are prepared to pay upwards of £50m for Stones, which would break the world record fee for a defender.

Chelsea had a £38m bid for Stones rejected this summer and are expected to revive their interest in the defender, but United are confident that the London club’s disastrous season will make Manchester a more attractive option for the player.

However, the club are aware that Everton will not let Stones leave Merseyside easily.

Louis van Gaal has brought a number of young players to Old Trafford such as Memphis Depay, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial and Stones would certainly fit the profile of an up and coming youngster.

The Englishman is just 21 but his confidence on the ball belies his years. He would be a superb addition but the way the story has come out smacks of United trying to save face following their meek Champions League exit this week.
