David de Gea: Manchester United return was incredible

David de Gea has thanked Manchester United fans for the way they welcomed him back to the club after his collapsed Real Madrid transfer in the Summer.

The Spanish shot stopper missed the first six games of the season due to the uncertainty of his future at the club but has since gone on to reclaim his place as Man United’s undisputed No.1.

Shortly after his failed transfer he signed a new four-year contract with Louis van Gaal‘s side, he made his first appearance of the season against Liverpool in September.

He found it difficult to explain the overwhelming experience of fans at Old Trafford making him feel immediately welcome.

Speaking to Inside United about staying at the club, De Gea said: “It was just incredible, the welcome that I received from all the Manchester United fans.

“It was a special game, a derby against Liverpool, so to have won at home, in that fantastic atmosphere, it was unforgettable! It was amazing. It’s difficult to be able to describe how I felt at that moment, even if I try to. I just want to thank all the fans for the support they’ve always given me since the first day I arrived here. It was just incredible.”

When asked about whether it was good to be back playing football, De Gea added: “Yeah, it was. That was the main thing for me, after the whole summer, getting back to playing again. And coming back to Old Trafford against Liverpool was just perfect!”

De Gea has been fantastic for United again this year for the third consecutive season and has shown why it was so important to keep him, but I do fear about his future once again going into this summer.

The club hasn’t done enough to show De Gea that United will be challenging for trophies on all fronts and for a player of his calibre that’s extremely important. In the short-term, De Gea’s focus will be on winning the Premier League and earning himself the No.1 position for Spain ahead of Euro 2016.

Looking ahead to the future, I do hope De Gea ignores Real Madrid’s continued advances and wants to stay at United but unless we dramatically improve and show we are one of the world’s best clubs, it’s going to become increasingly harder to keep him here.
