Manchester United’s Juan Mata fails to make any impact in woeful Bournemouth defeat

by Leo Nieboer

Juan Mata struggled to make any real impact in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Spaniard was practically invisible for the entirety of what was a high tempo, physical encounter.

A quick glance at the stats show how anonymous Mata really was: 0 shots, 0 chances created, 0 crosses, 89% pass accuracy.

Away games against gritty underdogs like Bournemouth have never been Mata’s forte, and that was proved to be the case once again today.

For a player of such high calibre who, in the midst of an injury crisis, needed to step up to the plate more than ever today, United fans should expect a lot more from the Spaniard.

Like the rest of van Gaal’s side, Mata just didn’t show enough conviction against a team they should have beaten comfortably.
