FC Midtjylland chairman Rasmus Ankersen knows they can’t outspend Manchester United but insists they have a chance at out-thinking them.
Louis van Gaal‘s team will face the Danish side after being drawn against them in the last-32 of the Europa League.
Famous for their use of analytics in his club, Ankersen’s radical new way of thinking has helped FC Midtjylland propel themselves to the top of Danish football and they intend to use that to their advantage against Manchester United.
“We’re a small club with a small budget,” Ankersen told BT Sport.
“We can’t win by outspending the competition so we have to out-think them and I think that’s why we’ve been successful competing so far in the Europa League.
“There is not a huge chance for us to beat Manchester United but there is a chance and we’ll take up the challenge.”
This has the potential to be one of the most boring football games ever played doesn’t it?
On the one hand we have a pragmatic van Gaal and his patient possession without penetration; on the other hand, we have a football club which is run by statistics designed to eliminate subjectivity and human error.
By all accounts, it’s not football as we know or love it.
United will be heavy, heavy favourites to qualify for the next round of the Europa League but being favourites has counted for nothing so far in plenty of our games this season, so I refuse to count any game as a banker any more.
