Manchester United’s U21s might have scored six against Leicester City on Monday night but it was the performance of Timothy Fosu-Mensah at right-back which really caught the eye.
Fosu-Mensah had never played at right-back before but you’d never have known because he looked so comfortable in it straight away. His natural positions are in defensive midfield or at centre-back, but his versatility stretches much further than that.
In terms of prospects from our academy, for me I think Fosu-Mensah is one of the best talents we’ve got coming through and fans were particularly impressed with how he got on against Leicester:
So many positives for #mufc U21s. Redmond looks like he'll be a big player for the team in 2016 while Fosu-Mensah oozed class at right-back.

Can't keep up with this – Powell makes it 5 nil with a close range header after great work by Timothy Fosu-Mensah. (What a great prospect!)

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is outrageously talented.

Fosu-Mensah, playing out of position at right back, looks like he's played there for years. What a prospect he is.

I’ve been a big fan of Fosu-Mensah since he arrived from Ajax last summer. As soon as he started playing with the U18s, you could see he was a player mature beyond his years both physically and mentally. He was always a step ahead of those around him.
Within the space of 18 short months Fosu-Mensah has played at U18s, U19s and U21s level for United and as his performance against Leicester showed, even in an unfamiliar right-back role he can steal the show.
He’s definitely one to watch for the future or, who knows, maybe even this season with so many youngsters getting drafted into the first-team due to injuries and with Matteo Darmian struggling for fitness and Antonio Valencia out following surgery, could he be a surprise package at right-back like Guillermo Varela?
