Senior members of the squad have reportedly complained to club officials about van Gaal’s totalitarian approach and his restrictive style of play.
Officials at Man United are also said to be doubting the veteran Dutchman, despite reports that came out last week suggesting the club were happy with him.
Some players who had previously warmed to van Gaal’s methods are now completely against the 64-year-old. Van Gaal is said to be particularly unreceptive when it comes to how to get the most out of United’s attacking players.
United’s board had planned to back van Gaal in the January transfer window but, following back to back defeats against Wolfsburg and Bournemouth, there is a sense that the Dutchman would target the wrong type of player ahead of what could potentially be a summer of change at Old Trafford, with Pep Guardiola said to be available.
However, at the same time, United are aware that the right buy could potentially be the catalyst to win the Premier League title as van Gaal has them within touching distance.
It is a precarious situation and United’s board face a huge decision if they do plan to let go of van Gaal. The club clearly needs an elite manager to take them to the next level and van Gaal is looking more and more like he isn’t that man.
