Former Holland midfielder Ronald de Boer backs Louis van Gaal to succeed at Manchester United

Former Holland midfielder Ronald de Boer has urged Manchester United fans to give Louis van Gaal more time to turn things around at the club.

Van Gaal has come under immense pressure at Man United after his side made an early exit from the Champions League last week before losing against newly-promoted Bournemouth.

There have been calls for van Gaal to be sacked, with Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola both linked with moves to the club. However, de Boer, who worked with van Gaal at Ajax, backed the veteran manager to succeed at Old Trafford.

“Sometimes when teams enter a stadium they already know they’re going to give three points away, but it this moment that’s not the case,” de Boer said.

“I think that if you spend as much money as Manchester United have over the last two years, you can expect criticism if you aren’t performing. But I’m a van Gaal fan, he’s one of the best managers I’ve ever worked with.

“I believe in him, I stand behind him and I think in the end he will do it. They’re only two wins away from Leicester at the top of the league, so they’re still very much in the hunt for the title. We just have to be patient.”

De Boer may have faith in van Gaal but patience among fans is wearing thin.

Van Gaal giggs

United are playing a turgid brand of football and results have not been good enough considering the millions they spent in the summer. Anything less than three points against Norwich City next weekend and van Gaal can expect the pressure on him to reach fever pitch.
