David de Gea: Manchester United can still challenge for the Premier League title

David de Gea believes Manchester United can still challenge for the Premier League title despite their poor form in recent weeks.

Man United were knocked out of the Champions League last week following defeat against Wolfsburg and they were beaten 2-1 by Bournemouth on Saturday.

Louis van Gaal has come under immense pressure at Old Trafford as a result but De Gea insisted United are still aiming to challenge for the league.

“I think that the Premier League is very competitive and there are a lot of strong teams, fighting hard to climb the table and fighting to win the league,” De Gea said.

“It’s a real battle, this league is very tough to win and there will be a number of teams who will be in the shake-up for the title, like every year, and let’s just hope that we are right up there and in the hunt for that title at the end of the season as that would be very important.”

A title challenge is the least expected of van Gaal now that the team are out of the Champions League, particularly with the amount of money he spent in the summer.

If the Dutchman fails to provide one, serious questions will be asked of him next year. With Pep Guardiola reportedly becoming available next summer, it remains to be seen if the United board will stick or twist with van Gaal.
